What is PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can develop in any person who has experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. Traumatic events can include car accidents, sexual assaults, physical / psychological violence, warfare and natural disasters, or an event where the person felt a threat to their life, horror, intense fear or helplessness. Not everyone who experiences the same event will have the same reaction to it. Some people may develop PTSD while others may not.

First Responders are frequently and regularly exposed to traumas as part of their daily jobs, which can have a cumulative effect on their mental health.

Symptoms can include:

  • Avoiding reminders of the events
  • Hypervigilance
  • Flash Backs
  • Panic and anxiety attacks
  • Nightmares
  • Feeling emotionally numb and detached
